Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay immediately became enthralled with that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages via the medium of art. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just a young student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage belonging to one of the juries. In the course of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
